  • The Buddha in the Tree, also known as the "Buddha in the Bodhi Tree," is a significant Buddhist site in Ayutthaya, Thailand. The statue, a Buddha statue surrounded by a bodhi tree, is believed to have been constructed around 1630 AD, during the reign of Ayutthaya, the capital of the Kingdom of Siam. The statue originally stood atop a stupa at Wat Mahathat. During the Burmese invasion of Ayutthaya in 1767, the temple was destroyed, along with the stupa. Legend has it that the Burmese army, while looting Ayutthaya, chopped off the heads of all the Buddha statues in the temples. However, one statue fell beneath the bodhi tree and, over time, became engulfed by the tree's roots, resulting in its current state.
